galph-air concept · no licence

A travel company that routes by light, not by landmark.

Small trips built backwards from when a place is worth photographing, not from what a guidebook says is famous. You come home with a body of work instead of four hundred pictures you will never open again.

The premise

Every tour on earth is scheduled around opening hours.

Which is why the photographs everybody brings home look the same: taken at eleven in the morning, in flat light, from the spot the bus parks. The place was never the problem. The hour was.

I have driven two coasts of the United States and most of Colombia with a camera, and the thing I learned is embarrassingly simple. A location is not good or bad; it is good at a time. Get that right and an ordinary street is worth the trip. Get it wrong and a wonder of the world is a postcard you already own.

Sunrise is the itinerary.

So the routing runs the other way around. Pick the frames you want to come home with, work out when each one is possible, and let the sleeping and the driving arrange themselves around that. It means strange hours and short days and a hard cap of six people, because seven photographers at one viewpoint is a queue.

And you leave with something finished. Not a folder. An edited set, sequenced, with your name on it, printed if you want it printed. The trip is the shoot; the book is the deliverable.

How it would work

The whole product is one scheduling problem, solved honestly.

01

The route, generated from the sun

Each location in the catalogue stores a bearing, a best season and a preferred hour. Feed it a date range and it returns an order: which place on which morning, and how far you have to drive the night before to make it. solar position + drive time, which is a solvable problem and nobody in this industry solves it.

02

The boarding pass

Booking confirmation as an object worth keeping rather than a PDF receipt: route, dates, the frames the trip is built around, and the map. This one is already designed and already on the internet. It was built for the travel section of davidgalph.com before there was any idea of a company attached to it.

03

Deposits in two currencies

Travellers come from the United States and from Colombia, and those are two different payments worlds. Cards and wallets on one side, bank transfer and local rails on the other. A deposit holds the seat, the balance is due before departure, and refunds follow a policy written before anybody needs it.

04

Six seats, and the sixth is visible

Inventory is trivially small, so it should be shown. Seats remaining per departure, on the page, in real time. Scarcity is only obnoxious when it is invented; when the cap is real, hiding it is the strange choice.

05

The book at the end

Everyone's selects go into a shared edit, sequenced by someone who does this for a living, and out the other side comes a printed run. It routes to the same print lab as the gallery, which is not a coincidence: these two share a spine.

Honest inventory

The brand is finished. The company is not legal.

This is the one where the gap between the design and the business is widest, and the missing half is entirely paperwork rather than craft.

● exists today
  • The map. Twenty-one places drawn across two panels, United States and Colombia, live on the travel page.
  • The boarding pass. Designed and built, in the brand.
  • Ten trips documented. Routes, seasons and field notes from journeys already taken.
  • The photographs. The proof that the routing idea produces something. That is what the whole archive is.
○ does not exist
  • A licence. Seller of travel registration, bonding and insurance. Non-negotiable and not obtained.
  • Ground operators. Vehicles, drivers, lodging contracts, local permits.
  • The itinerary engine. Specified above, not written.
  • A single booking. Nobody has ever paid for this.

The long version

The deck is being written.

The open page stays open. The long one carries the cost per traveller, what six seats have to sell for before this is worth anyone's month, the licensing route in two countries, and the reason I think the book is the actual product.
